Carnival Moon Dough

We had a lot of fun making Moon Dough to accompany our Recipe Books.  Moon Dough is made by mixing cornflour and hair conditioner.  Not only does it feel soft and silky, but it smells great to.

Book Club

Once a week we get together in our book club groups to discuss the latest book we are reading.  This is a great opportunity to talk about the things we like, don't like, favourite characters, favourite genres, favourite authors, and things we have learned.  Sometimes we get ideas about books or series that we might like to tap into.

Maliesi's New Puppy

We were so lucky to meet Maliesi's new puppy last week.  She was very friendly.  Some of us were treated to a cuddle and a face wash.

Playdough...Fundough

We have a new task to explore...

The TASK

The teachers at Kahikatea Kindy have noticed some of their children are bored with the playdough.  They are concerned that if they don’t change their recipe to make it more exciting, lots of children will stop playing at the playdough table.  Many of the children have food allergies so they need to be careful what ingredients they use.  Your task is to come up with a recipe for playdough, that meets the following criteria:

- doesn't stain
- is safe to eat - might be horrible to eat but is
safe for children with allergies
- doesn’t go mouldy
- is inexpensive
- is pliable and stretchy

- is exciting for kindy kids to play with

Collaborative Writing Using Google Docs

Wednesday 8pm

At 8pm on Wednesday night, Mrs O and Mrs H discovered Logan and Ethan working together on a collaborative document via their google drives.  Together they were drafting, recrafting and editing an A to T poem on Minecraft.

Mrs O and Mrs H were able to watch the writing unfold and to make comments as the boys went.  The photo above is a screen shot of what was happening.

Google docs has sparked a real interest in writing for these boys and this has spilled into the classroom today.  Other children are becoming interested.

This is an example of how learning can happen anywhere, anyplace and at anytime.

Such an exciting time.

Fact vs Opinion

How do we know the difference between a fact and an opinion? Fact = you can prove it Opinion = people's thoughts and ideas To help us learn these, we found a cool game on the web. Click on the link below and have a go yourself!

Hot Air Baloon

At the amazing Frankley school, Sophia (a student at Frankley school)

Mum bought in an enormous hot air balloon. Mrs Wilkinson ( a teacher at Frankley school) & Sophia & Mr Ritai ( principal of Frankley ) got to ride in it. The hot air balloon was big and red alright. At the start, while 67hq were working there was a strange alarming noise. Mr Ritai had set a fire alarm drill just to get us outside! There was a huge crowd of people at the field. To get the hot air balloon in the air the people at Remax used a lot of fire and gas. Lots of kids were screaming and shouting. It was really cool to see a hot air balloon in action.

Advertising Frankley using Rule of Thirds Photo's

In the flyers below, the children of Room 67 used their promotional photo's taken using 'the rule of thirds' to advertise Frankley School. What is the Rule of Thirds? The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts. As follows. rule-of-thirds As you’re taking an image you would have done this in your mind through your viewfinder or in the LCD display that you use to frame your shot. With this grid in mind the ‘rule of thirds’ now identifies four important parts of the image that you should consider placing points of interest in as you frame your image. Not only this – but it also gives you four ‘lines’ that are also useful positions for elements in your photo. rule-of-thirds The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot – using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it.

Turning need statements into questions

Made with Explain Everything from Karen on Vimeo.

Bear Grylls is coming to New Zealand to film an episode of being lost inNew Zealand bush. To survive in the New Zealand bush, he will need to be able to collect/trap food, treat himself for injuries and stay warm. Our (67HQ) task is to develop a survival kit to help Bear Grylls on hisvisit.  Our kit will need to contain at least one method ofcollecting/trapping food, one first aid item, and examples of how to stay warm. (All of the materials used to complete this task must be found in the bush).

In order to understand the task, we must first determine what we 'need to know'.  This means teasing out the key words and phrases.  The next step is to turn these statements into questions.  These become the focus of our research.

Today we took our 'need statements' about collecting/trapping food and turned these into questions.

Thomas comes to visit

Today Maliesis cat Thomas came to school. He is six and a half months old. Maliesi took the tablet so everyone in my class could see what he looked looked like when he was little. He loves to catch birds and skinks. He had three bothers and sisters and one was called Squeekers. Thomas's mum is Holly.  He was very frightened.  He lives Maliesis wardrobe. He was the first to open his eyes and first to open his ears.  He was also the first to start walking. He is the youngest out of his brothers and sisters. Maliesi enjoyed having him in our class.

Whakataka te hau – Karakia

This week we have been starting our morning with a karakia - Whakataka te hau

Whakataka te hau ki te uru,
Whakataka te hau ki te tonga.
Kia mākinakina ki uta,
Kia mātaratara ki tai.
E hī ake ana te atākura
he tio, he huka, he hauhu.

Tihei Mauri ora!

Get ready for the westerly and be prepared for the southerly.
It will be icy cold inland, and icy cold on the shore.
May the dawn rise red-tipped on ice, on snow, on frost.

 Join! Gather! Intertwine!

Mr Ritai was on hand to discuss with us the meaning of the karakia. This prayer talks about the cold, cold wind and what it feels like to be icy cold...it wakes us up and helps us to feel revitalised and energised.

We think this is a great way to start our day. Woken up, refreshed, energised...and ready for learning.

Making a Positive Difference by helping others

In this video, a little girl is getting bullied by a bigger boy. Another student see's this happening and comes to help. She stands up to the bully and tells him to step away. At Frankley School, we can all make a positive difference by helping others and stopping bullying. It takes courage to stand up to the bully but it is our job to stop this from happening. We are Effective Communicators

trim.AGkQ85 from Karen on Vimeo.

In this video, one student was stuck on a word so he decided to ask another student for help. This shows that he is wanting to understand the tricky words in a book. Part of being an effective communicator is making sure we understand what we are reading.

Te Ara Tika - positive difference

Making a positive difference with our learning from Karen on Vimeo.

We can make a positive difference at Frankley School by changing our behaviour from bad to good. In this video, one student was not getting on with her work, while the other student decided to concentrate on his learning. If all the students at Frankley School concentrated on their learning the teachers would be proud and the students would make a positive difference to their own learning. Kanitha, Ethan S, Ava

Email from Xavier

Hello Room 7, Today I made a big hole to dig for diamonds! We made it big but you can't really see because I am in the sun. It was really big tho. The diamonds are for extra money and I'm searching for gold and iron so I can put iron armour on myself like Iron Man and get laser arms. From Xavier, Callum and Mitchell

Closing circle

The end of the day is a lovely time to reflect and share our learning.  This afternoon we discussed some new vocabulary.  One of the new words we learnt was 'pinkalicious' after Mrs O read us a fantastic book called Pinkalicious.  It was all about delicious pink muffins.

Learning How To Edit

What: This week we have looked at where full stops and capital letters go
Why: We can use them in correctly in our own writing
How: We will know that we have achieved this by using a red pen to edit for full stops and capital letters.

We were introduced to proper nouns. We know the people and place names, days of the week and months, and titles all need a capital. We had to use a C to show if the word needed a capital or a C with a line if it shouldn't have one.

Use our learning board to work out whether these words need capitals:
frankley school, chair, room 67, elephant, banana, bigfoot

Questions about Albatrosses

The Spidermen Reading Group has been reading a story about an albatross. When we were reading the story we had lots of wonder questions about albatrosses. Here are our questions:

Now we need to find the answers. We are looking forward to reading about our answers.

Big Bird

This week the  Spidermen Reading group have been reading a story about an albatross. We predicted what words would be in the story. We got five words out of ten. We got half. Next week we will try to do better. To practice,  I could make some predictions in my reading at home.

We also looked at Wow words in our story. We found lots of wow words that described when the albatross was flying in the storm.
